On December 3, 1976, Bob Marley, Rita Marley and manager Don Taylor were shot during rehearsals for the Smile Jamaica Concert in an apparent politically-motivated assassination attempt. Bob was simply attempting to put on a free concert for the people, but the incumbent gov't decided to hold a snap election 10 days after, making the event appear to be in support of the democratic socialist People's National Party. So, in an attempt to stop the concert, two gunman entered Bob's HQ at 56 Hope Road and shot up the place. A bullet grazed Bob's chest and lodged into his forearm. Rita was shot in the back of the head through the car window trying to escape. Don was shot multiple times in the chest, needing to be flown to Miami for emergency surgery. Thankfully, all three survived the attack. And so, unshaken, Bob performed the show as planned just two days later, noting, "The people who are trying to make this world worse aren't taking a day off. How can I?"

Three nights before the shooting, Bob noted he had a dream where he was surrounded by gunfire. During the dream, the voice of God spoke to him and said, "Don't run—stand up." And so when the gunfire started, Bob instantly remembered this dream, and instead of running, he stood up tall and turned to his side, making himself a smaller target. Because of this, instead of get shot in the stomach, the bullet simply grazed his shot before lodging in his arm, likely saving his life.
