ABC27 is asking viewers to weigh in after a debate in which Stacy Garrity delivered a forceful performance and clearly outshone Josh Shapiro. Garrity pressed her case on the issues, challenged Shapiro’s record, and gave voters plenty to consider.

Words matter. Leadership requires accountability.

Lehigh County Republican Committee Chairman George Rivera is calling on local and national Democratic leaders to denounce County Controller Mark Pinsley’s past remarks—and on organizations currently endorsing him to withdraw their support.

During a January 2022 redistricting hearing, Pinsley objected to a proposed district combining Allentown and Bethlehem and stated, “We don’t need a ghetto.” The remark drew criticism from Republican and Democratic officials. Pinsley later explained that he intended a historical reference to the Warsaw ghetto.

As a person of color and a Hispanic leader in Lehigh County, Rivera finds the language highly offensive and believes that explanation does not erase its impact. Public officials should understand how their words affect the communities they serve.

An endorsement is a statement of trust. Organizations that stand for dignity, inclusion, and respect should hold those they endorse accountable to those values.

Rivera is also calling for consistency from Democratic National Committee Vice Chair Malcolm Kenyatta. During their 2024 primary contest, Kenyatta accused Pinsley of disliking Black people—an accusation Pinsley disputed. More recently, Kenyatta called for accountability following reports of racist and homophobic remarks directed at him; the accused lawmaker denied the allegations.

Will Kenyatta now publicly address Pinsley’s documented words? Opposition to racism and racially insensitive language should never depend on party affiliation or political advantage.

Lehigh County’s Black and Hispanic residents deserve respect every day. The same standard should apply to every public official.
