As a Democratic rancher in red Nebraska, Trina Hanzel was used to biting her tongue around her Republican neighbours.

Fearing that criticising President Trump or identifying herself as a progressive voter could negatively impact the family business, she avoided discussing politics with her peers. But with soaring diesel and fertiliser prices sparked by the Iran war compounding her farm’s losses, she decided she had nothing to lose.

Rather than ostracising herself from customers and damaging her business, Hanzel found that making herself out as a Democrat led to a sudden windfall.

Last month she became one of more than 200 suppliers to join the progressive Blue Dot Farmers movement, which seeks to connect progressive customers with Democrat-voting meat suppliers
