In honor of Black History Month, the Arlington Fire Department proudly recognizes Firefighter John Self, who became the City’s first African-American firefighter over 50 years ago.

Firefighter Self, who passed away in 2022, was a true trailblazer in Arlington and North Texas history. Born and raised in Zachary, Louisiana, he earned a Business Management degree from Southern University in Baton Rouge in 1973. After graduation, he and his bride-to-be, Beatrice, moved to Arlington in search of their American dream. That same year, he joined the Arlington Fire Department and was assigned to Central Fire Station (Station 1).

Self later transitioned careers and continued breaking barriers, becoming TXU/Oncor’s first African-American customer service representative in Arlington. After years of exceptional performance and leadership, he was named the company’s first African-American male vice president in 2004, concluding his career in 2008 as a direct report to the company chairman.

Although Firefighter Self is no longer with us, his legacy remains a proud part of the Arlington Fire Department. He opened doors for others to follow and helped shape a fire service that reflects the diversity of the community we serve. Today, our department is strengthened by individuals from many backgrounds, cultures, and walks of life — a diversity that helps us better serve our citizens every day.
