Prevention can't be only the job of the person who might get hurt.

If your son (or any kid you love) is in college, on a team, or in a friend group with a group chat — have this talk:

💬 "If a message ever shows up about someone who's drunk or passed out, that's an emergency — not a joke."
💬 "Go to the door. Get help. Call 911 or an RA."
💬 "You will NEVER be in trouble with us for calling for help."
💬 "Being the guy who 'ruined the night' is better than being the guy who did nothing."

Many campuses have medical amnesty policies so students aren't punished for calling for help. Look up your student's school policy together.

This isn't about assuming the worst about our boys. It's about believing in who they can be when it counts.

We've all heard it. Maybe we've said it.

"She's fine, she's just drunk" is how people talk themselves out of noticing. It turns a warning sign into background noise.

Here's the truth:
🚩 If someone can't stand up, they're not fine.
🚩 If someone can't hold a conversation, they're not fine.
🚩 If someone can't make decisions, they can't consent to anything.

The fix is simple: go check. "Hey, you okay? Let's get you some water." Stay with them. Get them home with someone THEY trust — not whoever offered.

(This goes for anyone — "he's fine," "they're fine." Same rule.)

By now you've probably seen the headlines out of Cornell University. A former student has filed a civil lawsuit alleging she was given drugs and sexually assaulted by seven fraternity members over several hours in October 2024 — and that a Snapchat message invited others into the room. No one has been criminally charged, two of the men deny the allegations through their attorneys, and the district attorney has now reopened the investigation.

We won't try this case on social media. But one detail should stop all of us: according to the lawsuit, a fraternity group chat with dozens of members saw messages about what was happening.

Most harm doesn't happen in secret. It happens around people who notice something — and decide it isn't their business.

So ask yourself tonight: if a message like that landed in YOUR group chat — your friends, your team, your coworkers — what would you do?

Screenshot it. Call it out. Call for help. Silence is a choice too.

🍍 Pick a code word or emoji that means "get me out of here" — no questions asked
📍 Share locations for the night with your crew
🥂 Watch each other's drinks — and don't accept one you didn't see poured
🚫 No one leaves impaired with someone they just met
👁 Choose one "eyes-open" friend who stays sharp and checks on everyone

It's not paranoia. It's just being a good friend.

Reporting has shown that the student in the Cornell case spoke with campus police about three weeks after the alleged assault. We're not here to judge the case — that's for investigators and courts.

But we want everyone to understand something about sexual violence in general:

Share this so the next person who discloses is met with belief.

Delayed reporting is common. People wait because of shock, fear, self-blame, not being sure they'll be believed, or memory gaps from alcohol, drugs, or trauma itself. Many survivors minimize what happened at first — especially if they'd been drinking.

When someone tells you matters far less than THAT they told you.

If someone discloses to you — even years later — start with: "I believe you. Thank you for telling me."
