Today, as part of Snellville's 100-year anniversary celebration, we unveiled the statues of city founders Thomas Snell and James Sawyer. I came up with the idea of including statues of Snell and Sawyer in the town center a number of years ago when we began detailed planning. Many people agreed with the importance of recognizing the city's founders as a vital part of honoring the city's history- and none more so than the Snell Family Foundation which funded the statues.
I mention this not to seek recognition or to pat myself on the back, but to make the point that it takes a group of dedicated people working together to make good things happen. Without the forward thinking and support of mayor Barbara Bender and Council members Cristy Lenski, Gretchen Schulz and Tod Warner, combined the outstanding work by city staff, neither the statues, nor the grove of mature trees, nor the unique pavilion (currently under construction), nor the mosaic wall by the splash pad, nor any of the other features that make our town center unique and inviting would have become a reality. Parts of the town center are still under construction, but it has already fulfilled its promise of providing all of our residents with a place to enjoy.
