I've received numerous phone calls and emails in support of and against the proposed public safety training center.

While I fully support the construction of a state-of-the-art public training center for our Police, Fire, and Corrections Departments, I cannot support the proposed location.

Undoubtedly, there is another location that can house this facility. However, the largest remaining green space inside the perimeter cannot be replaced or re-located.

Atlanta City Design, which City Council approved and adopted into the City Charter, has identified the Old Prison Farm as a critical part of the South River Forest. Locating the training facility at the Old Prison Farm would irreparably harm our ability to realize this vision.

While I fully recognize the importance of a state-of-the-art training facility, I also recognize the rare opportunity the City has to preserve and protect this greenspace in perpetuity.

I am confident that a new site can be found that meets the needs identified by our Police Department.

I also want to acknowledge and express my gratitude to Atlanta’s corporate community for their philanthropic effort to address the need for such a facility – and I offer my support in the effort to find a suitable location.
