Today, the Brookhaven Police Department mourns the loss of one of our own.

With heavy hearts, we share the unexpected passing of K9 Chico, a loyal partner, protector, and beloved member of our department family. K9 Chico passed away May 8, 2026 due to a sudden medical emergency.

K9 Chico was handled by Officer Castellanos. K9 Chico served with unwavering loyalty, courage, and heart. K9 Chico protected and helped keep our community safe.

This loss is deeply felt across our department. K-9s are more than working dogs. They are teammates, companions, and family.

We ask our community to keep K9 Chico handler, fellow officers, and all those impacted by this loss in your thoughts during this difficult time.

Thank you, K9 Chico for your service, your sacrifice, and the legacy you leave behind. Run fast, bite hard and Rest in Peace.

Today means something a little different when you work alongside people who've worn two uniforms.

Several of the men and women serving the Brookhaven community have also served this country in uniform. They signed up once, came home, and then signed up again; this time to serve the neighborhoods, families, and streets of Brookhaven.

For them, Memorial Day isn't just a date on the calendar. It's a memory. It's a name. It's a face they carry with them.

To the Gold Star families in our community, we see you today and we honor your loss. To the veterans among us, thank you for what you gave then and what you continue to give now. And to every hero who didn't make it home, Brookhaven remembers.

ATTENTION BROOKHAVEN RESIDENTS

Today, between the hours of 8:00am - 4:00pm, there will be a Brookhaven Police specialized training exercise taking place near Hampton Hall.

Kindly note that you might hear loud noises, and see an increased police presence, tactical officers, and tactical vehicles but please do not be alarmed. These sounds are all part of a controlled and scheduled training.

Rest assured, safety is our utmost priority, and this exercise is standard procedure.

Thank you for your understanding and patience.

Our K-9s are fast, and so are their handlers.

When we received reports of gunshots at an apartment complex, we immediately deployed a drone. Community members began calling in descriptions of the shooter, and we locked on. When officers arrived on the ground, he didn't stick around, tossing his gun as he fled.

Officers pursued on foot. When he jumped into a creek, they didn't hesitate, jumping right in behind him.

Kudos to the team that gets the work done every day keeping Brookhaven safe! You are a special breed!

To every member of the Brookhaven Police Department: thank you. What you do matters. Who you are matters. And this community sees you.

To the families standing behind them, thank you too. Your strength makes their service possible.

Mothers wear many badges.

Protector. Provider. Teacher. Listener. Encourager. Safe place.

Today, the Brookhaven Police Department wants to pause and say thank you to every mother, grandmother, bonus mom, guardian, and mother figure who continues to pour love, strength, patience, and sacrifice into the lives of others every single day.

Whether you serve at home, in uniform, in the workplace, or quietly behind the scenes, your impact matters more than words can express.

Thank you for the long days, the sleepless nights, the unwavering support, and the countless ways you help build stronger families and stronger communities.

From all of us at the Brookhaven Police Department, Happy Mother’s Day to the women who hold so much together with grace, resilience, and love. 💙
