Did you know?

The Guale were a thriving coastal society during the 16th century, with an estimated population of 4,000–6,000 people living in nearly 35 towns along the Georgia and Florida coasts.

The Guale skillfully adapted to life among the marshes and tidal creeks, relying on hunting, fishing, gathering, and agriculture to sustain their communities. Their deep knowledge of the coastal environment allowed them to flourish for generations.

🪶 FUN FACT FRIDAY

Did you know?

Following alliances with Spanish Florida, Yamasee communities were strategically resettled along the outskirts of St. Augustine, organized into multiple villages based on language and affiliation.

A 1717 census conducted by Joseph Primo de Rivera recorded approximately 430 Yamasee living in three settlements:

• Nuestra Señora de Candelaria de la Tamaja
• Pocosapa
• Pocotalaca (named after Pocotaligo)

At Nuestra Señora de Candelaria de la Tamaja, Chief Jospogue resided alongside other Yamasee caciques, forming a central leadership presence within the Spanish mission frontier.

Meanwhile, the village of Pocotalaca was governed by Perro Bravo, who had taken the name Don Francisco Yfallaquisca, reflecting the growing influence of Spanish colonial structures and identity transformation among Native leadership.

These settlements reveal how the Yamasee adapted to shifting colonial dynamics—maintaining leadership, identity, and community while navigating alliance, relocation, and survival in Spanish Florida.
