Valor Education has been named a Yass Prize Finalist and awarded $500,000. At the award ceremony, Jeff and Janine Yass recognized Valor for its distinctive culture, excellent curriculum, and exceptionally strong demand from families. Valor will use the prize money to accelerate its growth plan, which includes additional seats in Austin as well as a major expansion into Dallas-Ft. Worth.

"Valor stands out for the depth of the educational experience and the extraordinary scale of family demand,” Yass noted in its announcement. “This is not classical education reserved for an elite few, but a tuition-free public-school network with rigorous teacher formation and the ability to create hundreds of new seats while preserving a culture centered on wonder, humility, friendship and human dignity."

The prize was accepted by Stephen Gordon, Valor’s Superintendent of Schools, who thanked Valor’s teachers for their transformative work in shaping the lives of thousands of students.

“Each day, our teachers cultivate a place of learning that is joyful, rigorous, personal, and fueled by wonder,” Mr. Gordon said. “Families keep choosing Valor because they see the difference that comes from teachers who are drawing on a mission and vision rooted in the fundamental dignity of every child.”

We had a school before we had a building.

Hundreds of families joined Valor while we were still searching for a space, and when we finally opened, we made our home in an aging office building that had cavernous classrooms and walls that didn’t reach the ceiling.

Families didn’t come to Valor for shiny facilities — though we’ve now been blessed with several phenomenal school buildings. Instead, families chose Valor to nurture wonder, to foster encounters with beauty, to instill virtue, and to recognize the inherent dignity, uniqueness, and mystery of every child. This vision for education is lived out each day for 5,000 students across 5 campuses, stewarded by 500 faculty and staff who themselves are being shaped by this vision and mission.

Right now, Valor’s Superintendent of Schools, Stephen Gordon, is at the Yass Accelerator, sharing Valor’s founding mission and incredible growth story as well as our hopes to bring this transformative education to more children by expanding to new regions.

We’re incredibly grateful to the Yass Prize for recognizing Valor’s approach to education, which is shaping thousands of lives throughout Austin and San Antonio. We’re also grateful to the other 25 Contenders, who have found myriad ways to reach children with new educational opportunities.

On Thursday, Mr. Gordon will give a three-minute pitch to a group of distinguished panelists. The $1 million Yass Prize will be announced on October 6th at the Power of Innovation Summit in Philadelphia. This prize would support Valor in finishing its campus plans in Austin and begin our expansion to Dallas-Ft. Worth, where we can serve thousands more students.

Join us next Thursday, September 17, for a lecture from Dr. Kevin Gary of Hillsdale College on "Social Media and the Vice of Acedia." This special lecture will be held at 6 PM in the Valor South Austin Library. Please RSVP using the link in the comments to secure your seat!

Acedia is an uncommon word for a common feeling of exhaustion and aimlessness. While social media promises friendship and meaning, it cannot satisfy the person's deep desire for genuine connection and purpose. Only in real relationships with others can we find ourselves back on track. Dr. Gary will explore how we can become more aware of acedia in our own lives, especially in various forms of social media, along with the virtues necessary for proper use of this technology. Ultimately, we will learn to redeem social media, claiming its benefits while steering clear of its harms.

Valor Education has been named one of 25 Contenders for the 2026 Yass Prize, a $1 million national award that recognizes organizations providing an education that is sustainable, transformational, outstanding, and permissionless. In the coming weeks, Valor will take part in the Yass Accelerator to learn more about strengthening scaling our organization — all while preparing for a pitch competition that will take place in September. The winner will be announced October 6 at the Power of Innovation Summit in Philadelphia.

Valor proposes an education that is rooted in wonder and animated by our natural desire to understand. Valor students read great literature and philosophy, acquire a broad understanding of history, memorize a canon of poetry, sing, act, and paint; they study mathematics, science, government, economics, and Latin; they engage in daily seminars that form them in intellectual and social virtues; they spend time with the weak and vulnerable, and they encounter the beauty of the created world.

None of this is possible without teachers who have themselves been formed. Robert Spaemann observed that "you have to already be someone in order to teach," and we have built our faculty formation and culture around this reality. Every teacher, leader, and staff member at Valor schools regularly receives coaching and mentorship, reads and discusses great texts in seminar, attends academic and intellectual retreats, and spends full days at symposia led by university professors from across the country.

Valor is now educating 5,000 students at five campuses across Austin and San Antonio. We have plans to grow to 10,000 students and expand to new regions because too many children are receiving an education that is impoverished, that has reductive and narrow ends in mind. We seek to serve new families and new children, to greet them, to welcome them, and to remind them: “It is good that you exist.”
