We're falling back, and we're not the only ones adjusting! Daylight Savings Time ends today, and while we may be enjoying that extra hour of sleep, our local wildlife is adjusting to the time change too.

With the sun setting earlier, many us will now be commuting home in the dark, just as animals are becoming more active. Please slow down, stay alert and keep an extra eye out for wildlife along the roads, especially around dawn and dusk.

A little extra caution can make all the difference in keeping our wild neighbors safe!

It's the MIDDLE of and hopefully your feeds are flooded with BATS!!!
Today, we thought we'd share a classic Kim sketch to talk about ways to help bats.
1) TURN OUT THE LIGHTS! Nighttime light interferes with bats as they forage and migrate.
2) Leave bats alone--no kissing, pattting, chin chuckling; just don't touch!
3) BUT if you think a bat needs help, call an expert for advice BEFORE intervening.
4) Secure your habitat--bats live everywhere, but need good habitat. Many species think our lovely houses are fine places for them as well. Now is the time to check attics, chimney flashing, window frames, and siding to ensure there are no cracks and gaps that allow wildlife to move in.
5) Plant native! Now is a great time to plant trees! Native trees support healthy insects, which support healthy bats.
6) Act locally! Advocate for wildlife whenever local development plans come up--show up at hearings, write letters, be heard.
7) Get involved -- Volunteer for education events, to transport injured wildlife, to help a local conservation org. We can use all the help we can get!
Happy Bat Week!

Join the Chesapeake Audubon Society for their continuing Speaker series: next Sunday 2:00pm at Oregon Ridge Nature Center
Speaker Series
How Birds Communicate
Dr. Bernie Lohr
Directed by Christy Frank and Alex Goetz
Please join us for this fascinating glimpse into research on bird
sounds and what they mean to the birds. As an introduction to the
topic, we will view a related episode of David Attenborough’s “Life
of Birds”.
Dr. Lohr studies bioacoustics and auditory sensory ecology, taking
an integrative approach that draws on methods from
behavioral ecology, neurophysiology, comparative psychology,
and evolutionary biology to investigate fundamental questions in
animal communication. How do animals encode information in
the signals they produce? How do they extract information from
such signals perceptually? How do these processes function in
“noisy” natural habitats? And, ultimately, what factors shape the
evolution of such processes?
