The Ashburton Fall Festival is one week away.

Saturday, October 24th from 2:00 to 6:00 PM on Dorchester Road (between Dennlyn and Ellamont). Come spend the afternoon with your neighbors.

We’ll have horseback riding, carved turkey, soft pretzels, hot chocolate, candy apple c***r, and plenty more to eat. Bring the whole family.

And this part’s on you: dig out that family recipe and bring your best homemade fall dessert to share. Pies, cakes, cookies - whatever you make best. We want a taste.

So tell us in the comments - what dessert are you bringing? Let’s see what we’re working with.

Food, family, fun, and good company. That’s what this neighborhood does well. See you there.

A salute to a giant of our neighborhood: Mr. William "Little Willie" Adams.

If you've walked past this garden and its memorial stone on Carlisle & Vickers in Hanlon Park, you've stood in the presence of real Baltimore history. This spot honors William L. and Victorine Q. Adams, and the plaque says it plainly: community leaders, political activists, educator, entrepreneur.

Mr. Adams and his wife Victorine made their home right here near Lake Ashburton for years, and their legacy is woven into this whole city. He rose from running numbers on the streets of Baltimore to becoming the city's first prominent African American venture capitalist, and as one longtime friend put it, there wasn't a Black-owned business in Baltimore that he didn't help finance. He backed companies like Parks Sausage and Super Pride supermarkets and opened doors for countless entrepreneurs when the banks would not.

And Victorine was a force all her own. A city schoolteacher who became the first Black woman on the Baltimore City Council, she organized Black voters, and mentored a generation of Black women in Maryland politics.

Together they didn't just live in this community. They lifted it, and they helped shape a more just Baltimore for all of us.

So the next time you pass this garden, take a moment. This is sacred ground. These were our neighbors, and their story is our story.

Salute to Mr. Willie Adams and Mrs. Victorine Adams. Hanlon Park & Ashburton is proud to be your home.
