For years, I wrestled with how broken the system felt and how hard it was to get vacant homes to the finish line. Through persistence and consistency, we have built a system where the courts, acquisition, permitting, and a committed group of community developers are beginning to work together—and we are seeing homeownership increase.

This home on Normal Avenue was recently completed and is getting ready to hit the market. Last night, I got the call that another home we worked on along Darley Avenue, on the market for less than two weeks, is already under contract.

The system is starting to work for my community. There is still plenty of work ahead, but I’m grateful to everyone who helped us get to this point and blessed to watch the work happen in real time.

Anchor institutions have tremendous buying power. When those dollars are intentionally connected to local workers, businesses, and entrepreneurs, they circulate back into the communities that surround them. Blown away by the entire experience.

To spend so much time preparing for one moment, only to realize the preparation was teaching me just as much as the moment itself. I learned more about myself, gained new skills, stretched muscles I didn’t know needed stretching, and walked away better because of it.

Ms. Denise — to think our relationship started at one of my book talks. I’m truly blessed by how you were placed in my life and how freely you pour into me and so many others.

To share this moment surrounded by so many beautiful people, inside and out, is something I’ll always remember.

CLIA’s Anti-Gala was exactly what the name suggests—different.

A great space for ideas, but more importantly, critical thinking. The energy was high, young people were included in the room, and the conversations were thoughtful. There is a real niche being filled—creating space for people who are intellectually curious and want to be around thought partners committed to the betterment of people.

To also be recognized that evening made the experience even more meaningful. I don’t take moments like that lightly, especially when the recognition comes from people doing the work every day in a city I love.

Appreciate Rashad and the entire CLIA team for the recognition and, more importantly, for creating a space that filled my cup.
