Monday night, we held search and rescue training at the fire station. Searching for possible victims in a structure fire is an essential part of what firefighters do. Who rescues a firefighter when they need rescuing if they get hurt inside the fire scene? Other firefighters. Rapid Intervention Team members are a dedicated group of firefighters who remain outside a burning building or hazardous area soley to rescue fellow firefighters who become trapped, lost, injured, or out of air. In our service area, it is difficult to have dedicated personnel to do that one job. Usually, the firefighters on the team were doing other duties on the fire ground until needed to jump into action. Continued training for all firefighters is needed to keep their skills sharp and to keep a level head when going in after one of their own.

Oak Grove Community Fire District is proud to recognize 4 of our Firefighters in completing the Rope Technician Course at Signal Mountain Training Facility in East Tennessee. These 4 members spent 40 hours in the Awareness and Operational Rope Rescue Course then an additional 40 hours in the Technical Rope Rescue Course. These skills learned will provide a much needed resource to the Oak Grove Community as well as Sumner County and surrounding areas. Congratulations to Christopher Ripp, Michael Dailey, Russ Tapley, and Perry Gerome! Thank you for what you do for the department and your community!

Tennessee burn permit requirements Oct 15-May 15

From Oct. 15 through May 15, a FREE burn permit from the Tennessee Department of Agriculture Division of Forestry (TDF) is required to burn yard debris or conduct prescribed fires.

🧑‍💻 Online permits are issued 7 days a week, from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. local time at BurnSafeTN.org.

📞 Permits may also be obtained over the phone by calling 877-350-BURN (2876), Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. local time.

🔥 Permits are valid until midnight on the day they are obtained, so plan to obtain a permit the day you plan to burn.

Why permits matter:

🔥 Tennessee experiences approximately 1,000 wildfires each year during fire season, which is from mid-October to mid-May. This is when fire risk is highest in the state.

‼️ Most fires are caused by human activity, including burning under unsafe conditions.

📣 Burn permits are our way of communicating with you about when and where it is safe enough to burn during fire season.

How do we decide when to temporarily pause issuing permits?

📈 Every day during fire season, TDF's expert fire professionals analyze many fire weather data points, using a tool customized to Tennessee's wildfire fuels.

➡️ Based on that data analysis and on conditions on the ground, a decision is made every morning at the local level about whether it is safe enough to burn that day.

🔥 If fire danger is too high that day, we will temporarily pause issuing permits. Once conditions improve, we will resume issuing permits.

In November 2025, the Sumner County Health and Emergency Services Committee formed an ad-hoc committee to study and recommend a long-term funding solution for the Volunteer Fire Service in Sumner County. This group studied a baseline of where the fire service is at, the applicable laws regarding volunteer fire service in TN, the legal funding methods allowed, and formed a multi-phase multi-year recommendation to sustain funding for our current volunteer fire departments.

The first step for this recommendation was the hiring of a full-time Sumner County Fire Marshal in accordance with TCA 5-6-121. This position would coordinate the efforts of the VFD’s, assist with outside funding methods and many other items. The position came with the support of the Volunteer Fire Chiefs. The total budget ask for this position including salary and benefits was approximately $150,000.

At the budget committee meeting on October 13, the recommendation was changed by the committee to try and contract with someone for 18 months for $150,000 to do the job. No one knows what happens after that period.

If you support the volunteer fire departments of Sumner County, I ask that you take 5 minutes and send an email to [email protected]
This email will send to all 24 commissioners. Below is a sample email for your use.

Commissioners,

I am writing to you to express my support for the Sumner County Volunteer Fire Service. Please pass the initial recommendation of the Volunteer Fire Department Ad-Hoc and hire the first Sumner County Fire Marshal as a permanent position.

Thank you,

Thank you for your assistance on this vehicle fire today Highland Volunteer Fire Department - TN
It could have escalated quickly, as the vegetation is brittle and dry, and the vehicle was very close to a structure.
