🗣️The Potomac River has been contaminated once again ⬇️

Over the course of three months, approximately two swimming pools’ worth of fuel leaked from Joint Base Andrews into nearby soil and Piscataway Creek, which leads to the Potomac River. Maryland lawmakers wrote a letter to the secretary of the Air Force asking for transparency in the matter.

They claim the base failed to promptly disclose the leaks as required by its state oil permit and did not report the full extent of the discharge until almost a month later.

The base responded that it alerted federal and state agencies, deployed absorbent devices and environmental teams, and installed protective measures. Of the 32,000 gallons, roughly 10,000 gallons were contained, leaving 22,000 gallons of fuel released into the environment. Lawmakers say previous pollution has already damaged the surrounding area and this leak could cause further ecological harm to the creek. The spill is still under investigation.
