We are currently in the middle of mallard migration, but we wanted to take a second to talk about the fact that not all mallards migrate the same way. Using GPS data from 150 female mallards, we found that spring migration strategies are similar between mallards who winter in different regions of the Mississippi Flyway, but departure date and arrival to the breeding grounds varied by wintering location. In general, birds that winter further south tend to depart earlier and arrive to the breeding grounds earlier as well. Overall, mallards usually made only 1–2 stopovers and reached breeding grounds in ~3 weeks, suggesting many prioritize getting north quickly to secure nesting sites. But migration decisions ultimately varied at the individual level, with factors like experience and body condition shaping how birds balance speed with refueling along the way.
