It's Day 3 of Fire Prevention Week: Have you created a Fire Escape Plan for your household? NC OSFM has helpful resources that fire safety educators can utilize when creating a fire escape plan by visiting our website! Link in the comments below. 🔗

This prevention week, know where to go in an emergency with these 3 helpful pointers!

In your emergency plan, you should:
🔥Identify two exits from each room, if possible.
🔥Designate a safe meeting spot outside your home.
🔥Ensure everyone is aware of the plan, including children, seniors, and anyone who may need extra help.

When the smoke alarm goes off, everyone should know to evacuate immediately and not go back inside. Don't wait for an emergency to establish your escape plan. Plan today, practice tomorrow, and be prepared when it counts the most! 🔥🚪👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Turnip lanterns were used before the modern pumpkin jack-o’-lantern! In ancient Ireland, revelers hollowed out large turnips (or potatoes or beets) and carved them into a demon’s face to frighten away spirits. They lit the turnips from within with a candle or a piece of smoldering coal 🎃🎃🎃

They then placed the lanterns in the windows and doorways of their homes, believing that the carvings would scare off evil spirits and welcome deceased loved ones inside. Irish immigrants arriving in the New World during the early 1800s found the plentiful, easier-to-carve pumpkins to be ready substitutes for turnips.

But if you’d like to carve some creepy turnips, try it the old-fashioned way! Learn more Halloween lore at Almanac.com/origins-halloween-traditions
