A dog may understand place, heel, recall, and doorway manners with a trainer but still need help using those skills with your family. Start in a quiet part of the home, practice during ordinary routines, and add one challenge at a time.

For example, practice place while dinner is prepared before expecting the same response when guests arrive. If a skill becomes unreliable, reduce the distraction and rebuild from a level your dog can manage.
