It’s Public Service Recognition Week, and we’re proud to highlight John Newell, who has dedicated more than 40 years to serving the Commonwealth.

John began his career as an auditor with the Department of Public Works (now MassDOT), where he quickly saw how strong oversight helps guard against fraud, waste, and abuse. That early experience shaped a career defined by one principle: fairness.

Whether ensuring accurate tax reporting at the Department of Revenue or overseeing payments and financial reporting at the Office of the Comptroller for nearly 35 years, John has remained committed to doing what’s right—for both the Commonwealth and its residents.

Reflecting on his career, John says, “I am proud of my public service. Through the years I have helped thousands of people—and that gives me a good feeling.”

Thank you, John, for your decades of dedication and service.

This Administrative Professionals Month, we're shining a light on the individuals whose dedication and expertise keep our work running smoothly every day.

Today, we celebrate Cathy Hunter, Program Coordinator II for the Statewide Financial Reporting Team. Since joining us in 1992, Cathy has been a steady and essential presence—supporting financial reporting processes, maintaining critical documentation and systems, and ensuring teams and departments have the information they need to succeed.

From helping implement new tools like Workiva and SharePoint to supporting major efforts like the digitization of decades of financial records, Cathy’s work has strengthened how our office operates and collaborates.

What stands out most is her willingness to support any project, across any team, and her deep commitment to the people she works with every day.

Thank you, Cathy, for your 34 years of service and all you do to support our office.

April is , a reminder that protecting financial integrity is a shared responsibility.

The Office of the Comptroller is committed to strengthening accountability across state government and safeguarding public resources. One important way we do that is by empowering individuals with clear, confidential pathways to report suspected fraud, waste, or abuse.

Our Whistleblowers page provides information on how to raise concerns and highlights the protections in place for those who come forward. These tools help ensure transparency, uphold trust, and reinforce responsible stewardship of public funds across the Commonwealth.

Check out the resources available on our Whistleblowers page to learn how you can prevent fraud, detect issues early, and protect public trust: https://www.macomptroller.org/whistleblowers/
