This Memorial Day, the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts pays tribute to the courage, humanity, and patriotism of the newly freed Black Americans who helped give birth to what we now know as Memorial Day.
Less than a month after the Confederacy surrendered in 1865, formerly enslaved men and women in Charleston, South Carolina honored more than 260 Union soldiers who died in captivity at the Washington Race Course prison camp. Where others left behind death and destruction, these freed Americans chose dignity. They exhumed a mass grave, gave the fallen soldiers proper burials, and built a memorial inscribed with the words: “Martyrs of the Race Course.”
On May 1, 1865, thousands gathered in remembrance. Black schoolchildren carried flowers and sang songs of freedom. Black ministers prayed and read scripture. Members of the historic 54th Massachusetts Regiment marched in honor of the fallen.
Their actions were an extraordinary act of compassion and remembrance during one of the most painful chapters in American history. Their legacy reminds us that even in the face of injustice, Black Americans have always fought to uphold the ideals of freedom, service, and community.
Today, we honor the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice and the freed men and women whose courage helped shape the spirit of Memorial Day.
We don’t know them all, but we owe them all.

This May 26th, we close out the “I Wish My Dad” book experience with an intentional evening of brotherhood, reflection, and community.
📍 Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts – Roxbury
🗓 May 26
⏰ 6:30–8:30 PM
This final gathering is for men only. We’ve heard clearly that brothers need sacred spaces to speak openly, reflect honestly, and simply be present with one another — and we’re honoring that.
Whether you are:
• A father
• Someone who has been fathered
• Or a surrogate father figure showing up for others
…this room is for you.
We’ll break bread together with food from Soul on Shawmut, build community, and create space for real conversation during Mental Health Month and just ahead of Father’s Day.
There may be a brother in your life who truly needs this space right now. You probably already know who he is.
Here’s the ask:
✔️ Come if you can
✔️ Invite or forward this to 1–2 brothers who need to be in the room
Community saves lives. Brotherhood matters.
