Most children in foster care were not taken from “bad parents.” They come from families who are struggling.
Across the U.S., neglect is the most common reason a child enters care. Often that means basic needs went unmet while a parent was dealing with addiction, unstable housing, or simply couldn’t cope. In Utah, nearly half of the children newly placed in care in FY2025 came from families affected by substance use.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. In Utah, domestic violence was a contributing factor in more than half of supported abuse and neglect cases. Sometimes a parent is trying to get their family away from it.
For most children, the first goal is getting safely home. Foster families hold steady in the meantime, and at ALIGN, they don’t do it alone.
