Mark Poloncarz’s proposed 2027 budget adds $125 MILLION in spending compared to last year. That’s a 5.5% increase.

Here are the numbers:

$125 million increase in county spending

$12.6 million increase in the overall property tax levy, despite a lower tax rate

$7.1 million for Willowdale Park and Golf Course, including $967,000 in personnel costs

A lower tax rate does not mean the county is collecting less in property taxes.

As we review this budget, every dollar deserves scrutiny, and taxpayers deserve answers about where their money is going.

On October 13, 1775, the Continental Congress authorized the fitting out of two armed vessels to intercept the British supply ships, establishing the foundation of what would become the Unites States Navy.

For 251 years, generations of Navy sailors have defended our nation, protected our freedom, and safeguarded our economic prosperity on the seas and around the world.

Thank you to the active duty, reserve, and veteran members of the Navy who have dedicated their lives to serving our country. We are grateful for your courage, sacrifice, and commitment to keeping America safe.

It was an honor to join the General Pulaski Association last Friday for their annual wreath-laying ceremony at the Casimir Pulaski Monument. General Pulaski was a Polish native who served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, often credited with saving George Washington's life during the Battle of Brandywine. Each year, the General Pulaski Association holds the wreath-laying to honor his bravery and celebrate our nation's Polish-American heritage. Thank you to Chris Kramer and the members of the Association for the opportunity to participate in this great event.

In addition to her terrible treatment of corrections officers, Kathy Hochul’s corrections policies cost Erie County taxpayers $617,000. Albany still isn’t paying the bill.

New York State owes the Erie County Sheriff’s Office for housing state prison-ready inmates and inmates held on parole violations last year. Instead of covering the full cost, NYS left Erie County taxpayers to pick up the tab.

Yesterday, I sponsored a resolution supporting the Erie County Sheriff's Office request for reimbursement and calling on Albany to pay what it owes. I’m proud to say it passed unanimously.

Erie County taxpayers should not be left footing the bill for a crisis created by Kathy Hochul. New York State needs to take responsibility and pay its bills.

I’m thrilled to share that the Erie County Legislature unanimously passed a 100% Erie County property tax exemption for veterans who are 100% service connected disabled.

These veterans sacrificed so much to serve and protect our country. Giving them 100% relief from Erie County property taxes is one small way we can recognize that sacrifice.

Other states and municipalities already provide similar exemptions. I believe it is long overdue for Erie County to do the same.

It was an honor to introduce this legislation, and I’m grateful to my colleagues for unanimously supporting it.

I was proud to secure county funding for the Holland Volunteer Fire Department for a new generator, providing a critical backup power source during emergencies, severe weather and other situations when reliable power is essential.

It was great to spend some time with Chief Shaw and the members of the department and catch up on the important work they’re doing, their upcoming projects and their needs. Our volunteer firefighters do so much to keep our community safe, and I appreciate the opportunity to learn more about what they need to continue doing that work.

Thank you to Chief Shaw and the entire Holland Fire Department for your service to Holland and for the important role you play in supporting communities throughout the region. I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue working together.

Happy World Teachers’ Day to the teachers and educators who dedicate themselves to helping students learn and prepare for the future.

The classroom is where young people gain the knowledge and skills that shape their future, while creating memories that stay with them for years to come.

Thank you for everything you do for your students. Your impact reaches far beyond the classroom.

West Seneca Little Loop Football and Cheerleading has been around since 1960, providing opportunities for young athletes to succeed. I was honored to secure funding for them last year to help with equipment upgrades and for new fryers at their concession stand. It was great to hear how much of an improvement the new fryers have been, helping staff keep up with the rushes at practice and especially on game days. Thank you to Mike and Keith for showing me around, as well as to all of the Little Loop board and coaches for the great work they do.

I was thrilled to join the Erie County Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs for National Hunting and Fishing Day. I presented a proclamation from the Legislature recognizing the day along with a certificate thanking the Federation for its support through the process of adopting the local law allowing 12- and 13-year-olds to hunt big game in Erie County.

I was proud to be a sponsor of this legislation and am incredibly grateful for the support of the Federation throughout the process. It was especially meaningful to celebrate this year as we approach the first hunting season with the new law in effect.

Congratulations to the Federation on a successful event. Best wishes for a safe and successful hunting season!

The Comptroller’s last minute outrage over the KeyBank Center security agreement was hard to take seriously.

The agreement was submitted to the Legislature on August 26 and discussed in committee last week. Kevin Hardwick was a no show. Instead, he tried to shut down the contract on the day of the vote.

Instead of focusing on his bid to be the next County Executive, he should pay more attention to his current position. Maybe then he would’ve come to committee last week. And maybe the County’s Home Depot bills would be paid on time.

In 2022, KeyBank Center paid the county $120,000 for Sheriff’s Office security. Under the new agreement, that increases to $585,000 next season and $720,000 by the end of the agreement.

That is a substantially better deal for Erie County taxpayers. Our “taxpayer watchdog” should’ve recognized that.
