Help us help others in our community stay warm this Winter by donating new warm socks to our Socktober sock drive. Thank you!

It’s Socktober!! During the month of October, the Town of Newbury, MA is collecting NEW winter socks of all sizes - adults, kids & infants. Donations will benefit the Newbury Food Pantry. Donations can be dropped off at the Newbury Council On Aging 12 Kent Way, Suite 100, Byfield during regular business hours OR 24/7 at the Newbury Police Department, 7 Morgan Avenue, Newbury. Please help us keep our neighbors feet warm this winter!!

The Newbury Police Department also accepts non-perishable and hygiene donations, so if you're able to drop-off more than just socks, we'll appreciate it!

October is Fire Prevention Month, so we headed over to the Byfield Housing locations at Quaker Hill and Oak Ridge last week to do some fire drills. Thanks to all the residents who participated and evacuated their buildings when they heard the smoke alarms! The COA passed out fire blankets to those residents who joined us after the drills for a meet and greet with Chief Evans and the firefighters. Chief Evans also distributed File of Life magnets as well as carbon monoxide detectors to those who wanted a back-up to what's in their apartment already. Hopefully you learned some good fire safety tips...most importantly to leave your building whenever you hear the alarms go off. Many thanks to Newbury Fire Department and Evelyn Noyes for collaborating with us on these important practice runs!

Each Fall, people with Medicare can review their coverage for the coming year. The federal Open Enrollment period runs from October 15 through December 7. During that window you can switch between Original Medicare and a Medicare Advantage plan, or change your drug plan. Anything you choose takes effect on January 1. If you are happy with your coverage, you do not have to do anything.

It is still worth a short review. Plans can change premiums, drug lists, and which doctors are in network. Pull out the Annual Notice of Change that your plan mailed, and check three things: your monthly cost, whether your prescriptions are still covered, and whether your doctors are still in the plan. If a drug moved to a higher tier, you may want to ask the pharmacy or your doctor whether a similar one costs less.

Free, unbiased help is available in Massachusetts through the SHINE program (Serving the Health Insurance Needs of Everyone). Newbury residents can call us at the Newbury COA today to request a Plan Comparison Form. Once we receive your completed form we will reach out to our SHINE Counselor, Max, and have him call you to discuss your options. Max's schedule fills up fast...don't wait to call!

Be careful this weekend with the storm!

COASTAL STORM WARNING - special attention boaters, Plum Island residents & anyone living or staying in flood zones.

Please monitor the upcoming coastal storm, on track for Friday - Sunday. Expect wind gusts up to 40mph beginning Friday into Saturday, and dangerous seas off shore with coastal flooding and erosion. We recommend staying out of the water, including no surfing. We suggest planning travel in high risk flood areas around the tides.

GENERAL PSA - What to do if traffic lights are malfunctioning?

#1. Know how to proceed in the moment.
