Governor Patrick Morrisey today issued the following statement on the passing of Frank Giardina, a longtime West Virginia broadcaster, former Marshall University athletics administrator and former member of the Attorney General's Office.

Frank Giardina was a remarkable West Virginian, and I was fortunate to know him and work alongside him during my time as Attorney General.

Frank had a deep Christian faith and a gift for connecting with people. Whether behind the microphone calling Marshall games, working with student-athletes or serving the people of West Virginia, he made a lasting impression on those around him.

One of the many memories I recall fondly is traveling with Frank and hearing him regale me with stories about the sports legends in every county we visited. He was such a good man, and he loved our state so, so much.

Denise and I join Frank's many friends and admirers in mourning his passing. His contributions to West Virginia and the lives he touched will not be forgotten. Our prayers are with his family and loved ones.

Denise and I are heartbroken to learn of the tragic loss of Travis Price, a coal miner who lost his life last night at the American Eagle Mine in Kanawha County. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and fellow miners as they mourn this terrible loss.

Travis dedicated 24 years of his life to an industry that has helped build West Virginia and power our nation. Every day, our coal miners take on difficult and dangerous work to provide for their families and communities. Their dedication and sacrifice deserve our deepest respect and gratitude.

The West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety, and Training is investigating the circumstances surrounding this tragedy. We ask all West Virginians to join Denise and me in praying for Travis’s loved ones and the entire mining community during this difficult time.

A great night for high school football in Buckhannon!

Governor Morrisey joined the Buckhannon-Upshur and Fairmont Senior communities for tonight’s game, flipping the coin at midfield and spending time with players and members of B-U student government.

The Governor also had the opportunity to recognize Tammie Strong for going above and beyond the call of duty to help her community in the days following the July flooding in Upshur County.

Friday night football is about more than what happens on the field. It’s about the students, families and community members who make places like Buckhannon special.
