Make It a Date Night Not a Jail Night

Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching, and we want to remind everyone that our Detention Center has a maximum capacity of 264 inmates. We are currently housing 269. We’ll let you do the math.

Trust us, this is not the bed and breakfast you want to visit.

Do not drive impaired. Our deputies will be out in full force and actively watching for impaired drivers.

Make the smart choice and celebrate at home or plan ahead for a sober driver to get you home.

Statement of Support for Sheriff Eddie Cathey

The North Carolina Fraternal Order of Police proudly extends support to Sheriff Eddie Cathey of Union County. Sheriff Cathey has devoted more than four decades of his life to the service and protection of the people of North Carolina. His career, marked by distinction in the United States Army, the North Carolina Highway Patrol, and as Sheriff of Union County since 2002, reflects a lifetime of integrity, professionalism, and unwavering dedication to public safety.

Sheriff Cathey has consistently demonstrated sound judgment and steady leadership in guiding one of North Carolina’s largest sheriff’s offices. We know Sheriff Cathey to be a leader of principle who takes his responsibilities seriously, especially when it comes to decisions that impact his deputies and the community they serve.

While recent discussions have surrounded a personnel decision made by Sheriff Cathey, the North Carolina Fraternal Order of Police is not privy to the complete investigative file or the internal review process. However, we do know Sheriff Cathey. His careful consideration of every decision, his reliance on the thorough background processes of the Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and the Sheriff’s Training and Standards Commission, and his acknowledgement of the District Attorney’s review demonstrate his commitment to fairness, accountability, and justice.

Our organization has full faith in Sheriff Cathey’s ability to lead, to hold his deputies to the highest standards, and to make the difficult decisions that come with his office. His decades of proven service and his record of excellence are evidence enough that the citizens of Union County and all of North Carolina are well-served by his leadership.

The North Carolina Fraternal Order of Police stands firmly with Sheriff Eddie Cathey and commends him for his lifelong service and dedication to law enforcement and the people of our state.
