Traffic Advisory – Downtown Railroad Crossings Blocked

The City of Kings Mountain has been notified that a Norfolk Southern train is still currently stopped and blocking the downtown railroad crossings due to mechanical issues.

Norfolk Southern has advised that crews are actively working to resolve the problem; however, there is currently no confirmed estimated time of repair or when the train will be back in service.

During this time, motorists traveling through the downtown area will need to utilize the King Street bridge as an alternate route. Please allow for additional travel time and use caution while navigating the detour.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as Norfolk Southern works to address this issue. The City will provide updates as additional information becomes available.

As we conclude our celebration of National Public Works Week, we are honored to highlight two final divisions whose work is essential to the functionality and sustainability of our community:

Stormwater and Building Maintenance.

Our Stormwater Division works tirelessly behind the scenes to protect our infrastructure and environment. This team:

-Collects leaves along 125.63 miles of roadway on a bi-weekly basis

-Operates street sweepers across 128.82 miles of City-maintained curbline and 122 miles of State-maintained curbline bi-weekly

-Maintains storm drainage systems—including pipes, ditches, gutters, and creeks—along more than 64.63 miles of City roadways

-Completed 9 major stormwater repairs in-house, improving efficiency and response time

-Mows creek banks and approximately 50 ditches to ensure proper water flow

-Conducts quarterly inspections of 200 catch basins and annual inspections of 31 outfalls

-Actively engages with the community by participating in annual events such as Beach Blast and Earth Day

Equally vital is the work of our Building Maintenance Division, which ensures City facilities remain safe, functional, and well-maintained. This team is responsible for 14 City-owned facilities, performing day-to-day repairs, completing minor construction projects, and coordinating outside contractors when needed. Their attention to detail and proactive approach keeps City operations running smoothly for both employees and the public.

Together, these divisions represent the backbone of our City’s infrastructure—protecting our environment, maintaining essential facilities, and supporting the services our residents rely on every day.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Stormwater and Building Maintenance teams for their hard work, expertise, and commitment to excellence in serving Kings Mountain.

As we continue celebrating National Public Works Week, we are happy to recognize two divisions whose work helps preserve the beauty, dignity, and care of our community:

Grounds Maintenance and our Cemetery Team.

Our Grounds Maintenance plays a vital role in maintaining the appearance and upkeep of City-owned properties. This team is responsible for 32 City-owned lots, providing consistent mowing, trimming, and mulching to ensure these spaces remain clean, safe, and welcoming for residents and visitors alike. Beyond the growing season, they also step in to support the City’s leaf collection program, demonstrating their flexibility and commitment year-round.

Equally important is the work of our Cemetery employees, whose responsibilities reflect both precision and compassion. This team maintains more than 15,000 grave sites and surrounding grounds, ensuring these spaces are treated with the utmost respect and care. They also perform the opening and closing of graves, serving families during some of life’s most difficult moments with professionalism and dignity.

Together, these divisions work diligently behind the scenes to maintain the spaces that matter most to our community.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Grounds Maintenance and Cemetery teams for their dedication, respect, and unwavering commitment to serving Kings Mountain.

As we continue celebrating National Public Works Week, today we are proud to highlight two essential divisions that keep our city operating efficiently and safely: Fleet Services and Street Maintenance.

Fleet Services plays a critical behind-the-scenes role in supporting every department across the city. This dedicated team maintains a fleet of more than 300 pieces of rolling stock, ensuring that our Police Officers, Firefighters, Public Works crews, Energy Services and other personnel have reliable equipment to serve the community each day. In addition, they oversee and maintain the City’s fuel site, helping operations run smoothly and without interruption.

Equally impactful is the work of our Street Maintenance Division, whose efforts are visible across our community every day. From May 2025 through April 2026, the team has:

-Repaired 142 utility cuts, utilizing 204 tons of asphalt
-Addressed 35 potholes using 38 bags of cold patch
-Completed 16 concrete utility cut repairs with approximately 4.5 yards of concrete
-Maintained approximately 15 miles of medians and rights-of-way under contract with NCDOT
-Coordinated the paving of 8 City streets

Together, these teams exemplify dedication, precision, and service. Their work ensures safe roadways, dependable equipment, and a higher quality of life for our residents.

We thank our Fleet Services and Street Maintenance teams for their continued commitment to excellence and for the vital role they play in keeping our city moving forward.

Official Statement from the City of Kings Mountain:

The City of Kings Mountain would like to address and correct false information that has recently been circulated on social media regarding a lawsuit involving the City.

We encourage residents to rely on official City communications and verified sources to ensure they are receiving accurate and factual information. Due to ongoing legal proceedings, the City is unable to comment on specific details at this time; however, several claims currently being shared online are inaccurate and misleading.

Specifically, misinformation has been presented regarding parcel 49416, located on Gage Road. It has been claimed that a fully entitled data center project exists for this parcel. This information is incorrect. There is not, nor has there ever been, a data center entitled for use on this property. On February 10, 2026, the parcel was rezoned from Suburban Residential to Light Industrial. This zoning change did not approve or entitle any specific project or use. The property may be utilized for any use permitted within the Light Industrial zoning district.

The City of Kings Mountain remains committed to transparency, responsible governance, and serving the best interests of our community. We appreciate the public’s patience and understanding as the legal process continues.
