NYPD Officer, Security Officer, Blackstone Exec and Cornell Grad Killed in Manhattan Shooting

Manhattan NY July 30, 2025 A New York police officer, a “beloved” security guard, a young Cornell graduate and a senior executive with investment firm Blackstone were killed Monday when a lone gunman stormed a sprawling office tower in Midtown Manhattan and opened fire.
The shooter then killed himself, ending the deadliest gun attack in 25 years in the nation’s most populous city.
As investigators probe a motive and an NFL employee injured in that attack recovers at a hospital, here’s what we know about those killed:
Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old New York Police Department officer, was a Bangladeshi immigrant hailed as a hero by city officials. He leaves behind two young sons and his wife, who is pregnant with their third child.
Islam had been off duty but in uniform working security in the building when he was shot and killed, New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said.
Islam “was doing the job that we asked him to do,” Tisch said at a news conference Monday night. “He put himself in harm’s way, he made the ultimate sacrifice – shot in cold blood, wearing a uniform that stood for the promise that he made to this city. He died as he lived, a hero.”
His death is the 50th law enforcement death this year, according to the Officer Down Memorial page.
Islam had served in the NYPD’s 47th precinct in the Bronx for 3 1/2 years, Mayor Eric Adams said at the news conference. He was his father’s only son, said Adams, who met with Islam’s family Monday night and told them, “He was a hero, and we admire him for putting his life on the line.”
“Everyone we spoke with stated he was a person of faith and a person that believed in God and believed in living out the life of a godly person,” the mayor said. “He was saving lives. He was
protecting New Yorkers. He embodies what this city is all about. He’s a true-blue New Yorker, not only in a uniform he wore.”
Muhammad Mamunur Rashid lived next door to Islam. He described his neighbor as a “very good person,” saying his whole family are “good” people. Islam lived with his father and mother, his wife and their two children, Rashid said.
Messages honoring the fallen officer and consoling his family have flowed in from New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and police departments as far away as Los Angeles.
“Police Officer Didarul Islam represented the very best of our department,” the NYPD posted on X. “He was protecting New Yorkers from danger when his life was tragically cut short today. We join in prayer during this time of incomprehensible pain. We will forever honor his legacy.”
Just past midnight Tuesday, officials lined the streets outside a hospital to perform a “guard of honor” as Islam’s body was transferred to an ambulance. Some saluted, while others held their hands over their hearts as he was wheeled out.

Julia Hyman, an associate at Rudin Management, the real estate firm that owns the Park Avenue building, was also killed, according to Cornell University, where she graduated from in 2020.
Hyman was a Manhattan native and studied hotel and restaurant administration in college, the university said.
“Her first job after graduating was with Sagehall Partners, founded by a fellow Cornellian. Julia was on campus earlier this summer for her five-year reunion,” Cornell said.
The university said it is “devastated” for Hyman’s friends and family, adding her sister Ali also graduated from Cornell in 2017. “We extend our deepest condolences to all the families whose loved ones were lost in this senseless act,” the statement said.

Also slain was Blackstone employee Wesley LePatner, the investment firm confirmed Tuesday. She “embodied the best of Blackstone” and leaves behind a husband and children, the firm said in a statement.
“She was brilliant, passionate, warm, generous, and deeply respected within our firm and beyond,” Blackstone said.
LePatner’s family called her “the most loving wife, mother, daughter, sister and relative, who enriched our lives in every way imaginable.”
“At this unbearably painful time, we are experiencing an enormous, gaping hole in our hearts that will never be filled, yet we will carry on the remarkable legacy Wesley created,” her family said.
LePatner, who earned a bachelor’s degree from Yale University in 2003, worked as a senior managing director of real estate in New York, her Blackstone profile says.
LePatner was an “active volunteer serving on the Yale University Library Council, the ‘For Humanity’ fundraising campaign committee, and was a member of the Sterling Fellows,” according to the university.
She served on philanthropic boards, including since February as a trustee of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, where she also was a member of the Friends of European Paintings group, the museum said in a statement.
LePatner also was a trustee of the United Jewish Appeal Federation of New York and The Abraham Joshua Heschel School, where one of her children attends seventh grade, according to Blackstone and the school.

Aland Etienne, a security guard who was killed in Monday's shooting, was also a father, his brother Gathmand Etienne told CNN in a statement.
Aland Etienne, “a dedicated security officer who took his job duties extremely seriously,” also was killed in Monday’s mass shooting, according to his family.
“My family suffered a heartbreaking tragedy,” Etienne’s brother, Gathmand Etienne, told CNN.
“He was more than a brother – he was a father, a son, and a light in our lives,” Etienne said. “Our hearts are shattered, and we’re asking for your prayers and strength as we navigate this painful time.”
Rudin, the company that owns the Park Avenue building, had called Etienne “a beloved lobby security guard.”
Etienne’s death “speaks to the sacrifice officers” make to protect others, said Manny Pastreich, President of 32BJ SEIU, the union that represents more than 185,000 property service workers in 12 states, including more than 20,000 security officers in New York.

“Every time a security officer puts on their uniform, they put their lives on the line. Their contributions to our city are essential, though often unappreciated. Aland Etienne is a New York hero. We will remember him as such,” Pastreich added

Police are continuing their investigation after a woman from Chicago was shot and killed by a security guard this weekend at a nightclub in the west suburbs.
Police have said that 21-year-old Zulma Daniela Calderon Pacheco was killed when the security guard fired a shot while trying to break up a fight.
According to police, a crowd inside the nightclub began fighting and security tried breaking it up, one firing a gun.
The death happened around 2 a.m. Saturday at the Mansion Live Nightclub, 3801 W. Lake St., in Stone Park, officials said.
A fight broke out at the nightclub around 1:39 a.m., Stone Park police said. A security guard fired one shot during the incident, striking a 21-year-old woman who was a Chicago resident.
Stone Park police said there was no reason to fire a round inside the club.
"During the fight a security guard pulled out a gun and fired once which tragically struck and killed a 21-year-old female from Chicago," a statement from Stone Park police read in part.
The woman was pronounced dead at the nightclub after she sustained a gunshot wound to the face, the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said.
The death was classified as a homicide.
The security guard may face serious charges for his negligent actions, said police.

15-YEAR-OLD CHARGED WITH MURDER OF SECURITY OFFICER

BALTIMORE MD
January 28, 2025

A 15-year-old has been arrested and is facing first degree murder charges for shooting and killing a security officer at a McDonald's restaurant earlier this month.
Police announced Tuesday that a 15-year-old boy has been arrested and is facing murder charges as an adult for shooting and killing 38-year-old Jamal Davis on Jan. 12, 2025.
Authorities say that the shooting occurred following a dispute and altercation at the restaurant in the 4400 block of Reisterstown Road, police say.
The security officer was rushed to a nearby hospital where he later died.

Davis was working alongside his 17-year-old son, an employee at the restaurant, at the time he died.
LaShawn Douglas, the son's mother, recounted the experience her son endured to local media earlier this month.
"He seen everything. He seen everything...and that's a lot, you know," she said.
Douglas described the moment her son called her as his father lay bleeding. "He's saying mom, he's bleeding, and I was at work...you know mom, he's bleeding, he's bleeding out, he's bleeding bad it's not stopping. And I'm saying somebody tie something, you know, anything to stop it," she said.

The owner of the McDonald's restaurant, Danitra Bell, remembered Davis as "a great father and a respectful man."
Jamal was contracted as a security officer,” said Bell, earlier this month. “He had been here for over a year. He did a great job. He had great relations with the neighborhood.
Moments before this tragedy happened, he was sitting with one of our elderly customers who comes in every morning for coffee.

Detectives say that the murder suspect was transported to the Central Booking Intake Facility where he has been charged as an adult.

The shooting occurred at the Exotic Kloudz Bar & Lounge on Old Gilliard Road according to the sheriff’s department.
The victim has been identified as 16-year-old Antonio L. Campbell Jr. from Ridgeville, according to Coroner Hartwell.

Nightclub Security Guard Killed by Police Who Perceived Threat

CHARLOTTE NC
JANUARY 5, 2025
A nightclub security guard was shot to death by police who perceived an imminent threat from the armed man.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police identified the officer who killed the man outside the Coyote Joe’s nightclub and country music venue in Charlotte late Saturday.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police Officer Joseph Calabro shot the man after “he perceived an imminent deadly threat,” police said in a news release.
Calabro joined CMPD on June 27, 2016, police said.
The father of the man who was shot had previously identified him to The Charlotte Observer as 28-year-old Lucas Armstrong. Scott Armstrong said his son lived in Gaston County and worked for Coyote Joe’s as a security guard.
A CMPD officer who was off duty working security at Coyote Joe’s called the police that night.
Police responded to a report of a man in distress who was holding a gun to his head, the Observer previously reported, citing police radio traffic. “We’re trying to talk him down now,” an unidentified officer said by radio at 11:18 p.m. that night. “Get MEDIC started and a few more units to the building. We’re in the back.” Two minutes later, an officer reported: “We got shots fired… OK, now everybody can come, lights and sirens. MEDIC. Fire. Lights and sirens.”
Police said MEDIC pronounced the man dead at the scene.
CMPD said its officers found the man’s gun outside the nightclub.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation into the shooting, CMPD said.
CMPD is conducting a parallel Internal Affairs investigation, which is routine.
Per protocol, Calabro was placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigations, according to CMPD.
CMPD urged anyone with information about the shooting to call its homicide unit at 704-432-8477 or the Crime Stoppers anonymous tips line at 704-334-1600 or http://charlottecrimestoppers.com/.
Coyote Joe’s is among Charlotte’s most popular longtime nightclubs. The venue has hosted many big-name and up-and-coming country artists since opening in 1991 in the 4600 block of Wilkinson Boulevard. Luke Combs, Kane Brown and Dylan Scott also have done live music video recordings there, according to its website.
