Charlotte just placed a historical marker at Reedy Creek for Willie McDaniel, a 22-year-old Black farmer lynched in 1929 after demanding fair pay for his labor.
Nearly 100 years later, they give him a marker but justice was never served.
Malcolm X taught us: if you don’t know your history, you’ll accept your oppression as normal.
As Muslims, we must know the truth of the land we stand on. Justice isn’t only overseas, it’s here, in Charlotte, buried in our own soil.
A marker is not enough. Memory must lead to action.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month isn’t just about awareness.
It’s about accountability.
We can’t keep acting like this is a distant issue while ignoring what’s happening in our own circles. Culture is shaped by what we tolerate and too often, we tolerate too much.
Silence. Excuses. Minimizing harm. Protecting image over truth.
If we’re serious about change, it starts here:
In our communities.
In our spaces.
With our people.
Check your circles.
Call out what’s wrong.
Stand with those who speak up.

Gaston County School Board Member Tod Kinlaw recently posted an anti-Muslim message on Facebook referring to Islam as a “Satanic death cult.” This kind of rhetoric is unacceptable from any public official, especially one entrusted with serving all students and maintaining an inclusive, respectful school environment.
