Come Learn with Councilmember Collins

October 20 is National Youth Confidence Day™, a national observance I founded in 2018 with a simple belief: every young person deserves to feel seen, valued, and supported.

This year’s theme, “Confidence Without Borders,” reminds us that every young person’s potential deserves encouragement, wherever they live.

Here in Cheektowaga, our libraries, parks, and recreation programs help youth discover their strengths and build connections. This year, Wake County, North Carolina, also adopted a proclamation recognizing Youth Confidence Day!

On October 20, take time to encourage a young person, recognize their effort, or listen to their dreams. I can’t wait to see how you celebrate youth!

This week, we’re learning about the 2027 Community Needs Assessment Survey. Your feedback can help identify community priorities and guide the use of federal community development and housing funds.

Please take a few minutes to share your perspective. Your voice matters. Parks, youth and community centers, housing, job training, and infrastructure are among the areas your feedback can help inform.

Happy Sunday! Today on Come Learn with Councilmember Collins, we’re celebrating new businesses choosing Cheektowaga, like 7 Brew. Investments like these can create jobs, expand services, and contribute to our local economy.

Here’s a basic look at the process:

Town Supervisor’s Office: Connect with the appropriate Town departments.

Building Department: Confirm zoning and land use requirements before selecting a location. Get required permits and inspections.

Planning Board: Review development plans when required.

Zoning Board of Appeals: Consider variances or other zoning relief, if needed.

Every project is different, but each new business represents an opportunity for continued investment in Cheektowaga.

Happy Sunday! It’s time for Come Learn with Councilmember Collins.

This week, I’ll receive a Black Achievers Award, and I’m grateful for the recognition.

One of my greatest accomplishments, though, is staying humble and holding on to my desire to learn and help people.

Being teachable means having the right attitude: staying open, asking questions, and knowing there’s always more to learn. I’m still learning every day, and I’m thankful you’re learning with me.

I missed our Sunday post, but not the opportunity to share something important.

Come Learn with Councilmember Collins

Making Town government easier to understand, one topic at a time.

As Co-Chair of the Schools Committee, I believe supporting our students means looking beyond the classroom.

It means investing in safe communities, strong partnerships, youth opportunities, and the mental health and well-being of our children.

That is also why I drafted and sponsored our Youth Mental Health & Online Safety Resolution, because the challenges young people face today do not stop when the school day ends.

As we begin a new school year, I remain committed to making sure our Town continues to support students, families, educators, and the systems that help them thrive.

Wishing every student in a safe, healthy, and successful school year. 📚

Shoutout to Texas Roadhouse (Cheektowaga) for putting on an amazing family event, complete with a book bag giveaway and rib-eating contest!

And the winners? 🏆 None other than the Cheektowaga Police Department.

Congratulations, CPD! Who knew protecting and serving came with championship-level rib-eating skills? 😂👏🏾
