STATEMENT FROM INDIAN AMERICANS FORUM, USA
On the Ongoing Protests and Detentions in India
Date: October 11,2026
Washington D.C. / New York / San Francisco
We, the Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) under the banner of Indian Americans Forum, USA, express our deep concern over the developments following the recent protests in India associated with Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP).
We stand in solidarity with the democratic spirit of India and its youth.
We demand and appeal as follows:
1. Immediate Release: We demand the immediate and unconditional release of all students and youth taken into custody during and after the CJP protests. Dissent is not a crime.
2. Protection of Fundamental Rights: We urge the authorities to ensure that Articles 19 and 21 of the Constitution of India - the Right to Freedom of Speech and Expression, Right to Peaceful Assembly, and Right to Life and Personal Liberty - are fully protected and respected for every citizen.
3. End to Intimidation: We call for an end to any form of intimidation, harassment, or disproportionate use of force against peaceful protesters, journalists, and human rights defenders.
4. Judicial Oversight: We request that all detentions be subject to prompt judicial scrutiny and that families and legal counsel be given immediate access.
As members of the Indian diaspora in the United States, we cherish the democratic values that bind both nations. India's strength lies in its ability to listen to its youth and students. We hope that dialogue, not detention, will be the chosen path.
In Solidarity,
Indian Americans Forum, USA
