“This is a crisis and elected officials should be talking about it,” said Robin Peterson, co-chair of the South Side branch of the Chicago Democratic Socialists of America.
Peterson said rent burden is not unique to Chicago and Cook County. College towns, rural areas and even mobile home renters and owners are suffering from rising rents and taxes.
The Chicago DSA is a member of Lift the Ban, a coalition of community groups working to raise awareness of the bill at the community level. During the March primary, voters in 77 precincts across Chicago overwhelmingly approved a nonbinding referendum in support of the bill. Peterson, who lives in Bronzeville, said the neighborhood is gentrifying fast. The pending construction of the Obama Presidential Center has led to real estate sale prices and property taxes increasing. That, in turn, is driving out low-income renters and homeowners. In Pilsen, one-bedroom apartments that used to rent for $500/month are now renting for up to three times that amount.
A Look At The Calls For And Against Repealing Illinois' Rent Control Ban
Rep. Will Guzzardi said cities across Illinois should have the ability to address rising rents.

NYC DSA member Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has beaten her corporate-backed rival in the Congressional Democratic Primary. She ran on and .

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has done the impossible, and so have you, NYC-DSA!
The over 13,000 votes cast for her — in what has been the lowest turnout district in the country under Rep. Crowley — proves that working class people are hungry for a voice in politics.
Alexandria’s platform has opened the door to bringing truly socialist demands to the table in mainstream politics, including a universal jobs guarantee tied to investment in infrastructure, free public college education, debt forgiveness, Federal investment in public and affordable housing, “Medicare for All,” and more, marking the beginning of a true political movement serving the needs of the many. DSA and our coalition partners are chipping away at the reign of corporate-controlled “centrism” within the Democratic Party.
It smells like bread and roses tonight in New York!

On Sept 15th, STLPD Officer Jason Stockley was predictably acquitted for the murder of Anthony Lamar Smith. A small demonstration of outrage, numbering in the hundreds, was met with police brutality that was shocking even for those of us on the Left. Since then, there have been actions every day, ranging from voter registration drives to open-carry demonstrations to mall disruptions. The core message is simple: Stop Killing Us.
The movement in St. Louis has been led by Ferguson frontliners and has been largely ignored. The tactic of mass arrests, with no reading of rights or orders to disperse, has been common from STLPD, as well as unleashed use of chemical agents such as tear gas and pepper pellets, with the tacit encouragement of powers that be. Over 300 have been arrested, and those arrested have not only been demonstrators, but also journalists, legal observers, and onlookers and passers-by.
The activists in St. Louis are in direct confrontation with the disciplinary arm of racial capitalism who deserve our support. Here are the the two primary requests that have been made:
1) Make people aware of what is happening, that a struggle against police repression is vibrant in St. Louis and will continue to be.
2) Support for the St. Louis Legal Fund, as it faces an incredible financial hurdle, aimed at those who resist police brutality, by the police, to maintain their power. https://www.fundedjustice.com/campaigns/61HQD2
We are very proud of our comrades in the St. Louis DSA who have been actively participating and supporting these actions and hope to draw all the support for this movement that we can.
St. Louis Legal Fund
This is a comprehensive legal support fund for use in court and legal costs for activists in the St. Louis region. We are a jail and legal support group working with the community in a mutual aid model.
