More Water on the Ridge
By Carol Flynn

As a result of yesterday's post about the important role water played in the history of the Ridge, someone asked if there was a stream under the Castle at 103rd Street and Longwood Drive.

I thought I'd share the answer with everyone.

Yes, there was a significant stream, not under but right to the north of the Castle, where the school is now. You can see the depression of the land, and that the Castle itself is on a higher elevation.

Here is a real photo postcard from around 1912 that shows there was once a garden area there, with a bridge that ran over the stream.

No doubt the scenic beauty of that spot was a factor in Robert "Bob" Givins deciding to build his Castle there. He was quite the romantic at heart; he even wrote romance novels.

And that garden does figure in stories about the Castle - including ghost stories! Who was the mysterious woman in a white dress, described as being more like a nightgown, seen walking around the garden ... only to then vanish?
