Some scattered thoughts about Sam Kieth - I met him once very briefly. He drew a little sketch for me. I told him he's the reason I make comics and he just smiled politely. I first became aware of his work from a 1992 Marvel trading card of Nightcrawler. I remember thinking he looked like a balloon animal and it disturbed me. MTV's Maxx adaptation was a revelation. I was probably a little too young for the subject matter ... which is another way of saying I was exactly the right age. My understanding of comics, art, and storytelling would be forever changed. There was no turning back after that. I still keep a rare Maxx action figure on my desk that my parents had to drive all over town to find for me. RIP, Sam. All my characters have big ass teeth because of you 🖤
