Last Farewell of Friendship
Md Akteruj Jaman
At the funeral of a Muslim friend,
A Hindu friend stands at a distance, tears in his eyes—
He cannot go closer, yet the heart refuses to obey.
Does friendship ever accept the walls of religion?
They laughed together once,
Stood side by side in joy and sorrow,
Today one rests in the house of earth,
The other stands silent, grieving in the wind.
The rules of worship may differ,
But tears fall in the same language.
In the courtyard of the mosque today
A picture of humanity is drawn—
Not religion, but friendship
Becomes the greatest identity.
On the page of Rupantor News today
Let this scene remain in memory—
Humans stand by humans,
Love lives on even after death.
Religion belongs to each,
Humanity belongs to all—
May this bond of friendship
Remain immortal again and again.
