Our 19-member Progressive Caucus represents a vast diversity of experiences and perspectives of the people of our great city. We are supporting this budget knowing that we have fought hard to ensure that it centers workers and protects critical investments in the people of Chicago. Not in recent history has our city come so close to not passing a balanced budget on time. Because of our members’ efforts, even amid our financial challenges, we are continuing to invest in public health and safety with new investments in youth employment. We protected One Summer Chicago, ensuring that young people have productive opportunities and can invest in their families and communities. Just as importantly, we passed a budget without any layoffs to Chicago’s essential workers.
We know that our city faces many challenges in the coming year, and that’s why 17 of our 19 members voted to support the budget today. Passing today’s budget means we can immediately get to work on the 2026 budget, which is anticipated to be just as challenging. Chicagoans deserve a budget process that is less chaotic and more solution-oriented. The inclusion of additional transparency and oversight processes in the 2025 management ordinance will help position the Progressive Caucus and City Council to receive and analyze budget and expense data much earlier in the process to avoid a repeat of this year.
In 2025, the Progressive Caucus remains committed to continued investments in our community that don’t balance the budget on the backs of low-income families while also facing the financial reality confronting Chicago.

Joint statement with Chicago City Council Latino Caucus in support of Ald. Julia Ramirez. We are appalled by the attack on the Alderwoman and her staff. Freedom of speech and right to assemble don’t give license to physically attack public officials and employees. We stand in support of Ald. Ramirez and her staff in their service to the 12th Ward and the City of Chicago.
