Septima Clark knew that education could be more than the passing down of information. A teacher herself—and one of the architects of the Civil Rights Movement’s Citizenship Schools—she understood the classroom as a place where people could discover their voice, question the world they inherited, and begin imagining something different.
Today, on UNESCO’s World Teachers’ Day, we celebrate that work—and the people who keep doing it. But this year’s call to stand with teachers reminds us that appreciation isn’t enough. If we believe in the possibilities teachers help create, we have to stand with the people creating them. Listen to them. Value their labor. Advocate for what they need. And remind them that the responsibility of shaping what comes next was never meant to be carried alone.
Because building a better future is collective work. Today, we stand with teachers.
I’m for you. You’re for me. We got us.
