Farms for Disabled People aren’t a New Idea 06/25/2021

“We know that scattered site housing works for disabled people with high support needs and those with developmental disabilities, despite the many myths. We know that supportive housing can help vulnerable people, such as those with mental health disabilities, live and thrive in the community. Maybe it takes this supportive housing as well as supported decision-making. But it is doable. It is a right. We have already tried segregating people in institutions and the farms on those institutions. Parents need to stop trying to do that now.”

This year, for International Day of People with Disabilities, we celebrate the theme ‘Not all Disabilities are Visible’ to focus on awareness and understanding of disabilities that are not immediately apparent. These disabilities can include mental health, intellectual, developmental, visual, and hearing as well as chronic pain or fatigue, diabetes, brain injuries, neurological disorders, and more.

Meet Keshawn, who has worked at Five Guys Burgers and Fries since the end of September. He does a variety of food prep like cutting potatoes, as well as general cleaning around the restaurant.

HCDDS Employment Navigator Julie Combs has been working with Keshawn for more than a year. She helped connect him to Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities and job developers, as well as assisting him with career goals and looking for jobs in the community. “He was very reserved until we built our relationship and established his trust with us,” she said. “I’m really proud of him and impressed with the caliber of his work ethic and his determination.”

Before getting this job, Keshawn worked at Kroger and Longhorn Steakhouse. "I want to get my own apartment," he said about why he likes having a job in the community.
