MOHAN UPDATE! At the stoke of midnight (India time), Mohan entered the Wildlife SOS Animal Ambulance for his final ride to freedom. The majestic fellow gobbled fresh bananas and was shown some love by the official WSOS Mohan Freedom Team before the ambulance doors were closed. Now he is officially on his way to the Elephant Conservation and Care Center in Mathura. So mark the first minutes of September 22 on your calendars as Mohan Independence Day!

Many of you have graciously had your profile photo set to "Free Mohan." The time has finally arrived to change it!

This is our way of telling you that WE HAVE WON! Mohan has been loaded onto the truck and is now speeding his way to our rescue center where he will live the rest of his life as a FREE ELEPHANT. We shall give you some time to let this incredible news sink in and to run and grab a box of tissues to wipe away the happy tears!

We know how long you have waited for this moment, so we will be posting regular updates of his journey.

On behalf of Mohan, we thank you for standing by him all these long months and never giving up.

How one man repopulated a rare butterfly species in his backyard We can all contribute to conservation efforts — sometimes even from our own backyards.

For the last few weeks we have reported very little on the court battle to maintain the freedom of the Precious Four. It is with the heaviest heart that we bring you the latest update. Although India has made great strides in advancing the welfare of animals that suffer brutally, in the case of the Rambo circus elephants we have seen injustice at its worst. The court issued an order that all four elephants rescued from Rambo Circus be returned to the circus immediately which is dreadful. This decision impacts each of the elephants regardless of their current debilitated state and compromised health -- not to mention the cruelty they have already suffered at the hands of the circus.

How is this happening? The foundation for this decision rests on procedural flaws committed by the enforcement authorities during confiscation of the elephants. The decision does not even consider the blind elephant Goldie and her abscesses, nor the behavior of all four elephants, which is typical of elephants forced to perform in a circus -- and which indicates years of extensive mental and physical trauma and torture. The court order also did not consider the spiked chains on their legs, their rotting footpads, the overgrown toenails and wounds on their mouths, and the swelling from years of beatings at the hands of the circus. Nor did the court consider the low-quality, dry straw used as food, the elephants being tethered in their own dung and urine, and the fact that they were performed illegally -- with the circus violating multiple guidelines and orders of the authorities.

We are going to fight this injustice to the end in the higher courts! We need you to help us get these elephants the justice they deserve. We ask you to please sign this petition to the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, the Chief Wildlife Warden of Maharashtra, the Police Commissioner of Pune, and the District Collector of Pune. Let them know that it will be a great shame to India if they let cruelty prevail.
