Different varieties of the Moldovan “Troiță”. Wooden crosses — "troițe" — are a deeply rooted element of traditional culture in Moldova and a defining feature of the country’s visual landscape. They appear as roadside shrines, village protective crosses, and cemetery monuments, marking sacred space within everyday life. Some are simple and austere; others are richly carved, crowned with small roofs, painted details, or icon niches. More than devotional objects, "troițe" structure the rural landscape — they are installed at crossroads, on hills, at the entrance to villages.
