Every July, National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month is observed to bring attention to the unique struggles that racial and ethnic minority communities face regarding mental illness in the United States. This month is dedicated to fostering awareness, encouraging mental health care, and promoting mental well-being among minority groups. 🧠
The origins of National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month date back to 2008. It was established in honor of Bebe Moore Campbell, an acclaimed author, advocate, and co-founder of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Urban Los Angeles. Bebe Moore Campbell was a strong voice for mental health education and support for minority communities. Her tireless advocacy work highlighted the disparities in mental health care and sought to eliminate the stigma associated with mental illness within minority populations.
This month emphasizes the need for ongoing efforts to achieve mental health equity by raising awareness, reducing stigma, and advocating for systemic change. 📢
