We would like to thank the Barton County Commissioners for putting together this opportunity for us.

At Hometown Grants, we work alongside everyday heroes all the time — the people who keep our rural communities humming. Volunteer firefighters are special, however. They take real risks, for almost no pay, to keep the rest of us safe. We love projects where we can show up and seek funds for them the way they show up for all of us.

This week, as part of the Barton County KS Grant Writing Program, we submitted an $895,000 FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant — a regional application to bring new equipment to five fire departments across Barton County.

These volunteers show up as heroes in and out of fire gear, even for grants! The day before the application was due, our main contact Ryan Oeser’s baby boy also decided he was due. In the middle of working on the application, Ryan accompanied his wife to the hospital as she went into labor. Ryan stayed with us on the project — editing the application and even hopping on a quick Zoom with our grant writer from the hospital. That kind of heart is exactly what makes our work feel like more than work.

The best part? Little Gavin Michael was born that day! 🎉

We think "Grant" would make a great nickname… or maybe "Cash"?

❄️ Cold Weather Safety Reminder ❄️
As temperatures drop, Claflin Fire Dist. #1 wants to remind everyone to stay warm and stay safe—especially when using space heaters.

🔥 Space Heater Safety Tips:
• Keep heaters at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn
• Never leave space heaters unattended
• Turn heaters off before going to bed or leaving the room
• Plug heaters directly into a wall outlet — no extension cords
• Make sure your heater has an automatic shut-off feature
• Keep heaters out of reach of children and pets

Now is also a good time to test your smoke and CO detectors!!
