In a late-term medical emergency there are two patients in the room, the mother and a baby who could live. Proposition 1 writes legal protection for one of them and strips it from the other.
Last night the Bonner County Republican Central Committee voted to formally oppose Proposition 1, the abortion initiative on Idaho's November ballot, and to urge every voter in Bonner County to vote NO.
Proposition 1 legalizes abortion in Idaho through all nine months of pregnancy. It removes the duty that current Idaho law places on a doctor to try to save a viable baby, it rewrites the definitions so a child no longer has to be given a chance to survive, and it allows someone who is not a physician to perform an abortion.
It is marketed as being about medical emergencies. But Idaho law already protects a woman in a true medical emergency, and it already allows care for a miscarriage. Proposition 1 is not needed for any of that.
The Republican Party of Idaho platform affirms the sanctity of human life. With this resolution, the Bonner County Republican Central Committee puts that conviction on the record.
Read Proposition 1 for yourself. Then vote NO this November.
