No one talks about this part of rescue.

The part where the grief never really leaves.

People see the saves.
The adoptions.
The happy endings.

But they don’t see the ones that haunt you.
The tiny bodies you held while they took their last breath.
The nights you stayed awake begging them to make it until morning.
The moments you realized love and effort weren’t enough to save them.

Those moments don’t disappear.
They live somewhere inside you forever.

And sometimes they come rushing back when you least expect it — a song, a photo, someone else losing their beloved pet. Suddenly that same ache opens up again like it never healed at all.

It can make you feel broken.
It can make you feel lost.
It can make you feel like your heart has been shattered too many times.

But here’s something most people will never understand.

If you carry all of that grief…
All of those memories…
All of that love and loss…

And you still wake up the next day willing to open your heart again for another animal that needs you…

That is a strength most people will never have.

Because rescuers don’t have unbreakable hearts.

We have hearts that break over and over again…
and still choose to love anyway. 🖤
