On International Women’s Day in 1917, tens of thousands of women in Russia struck for “bread and peace” in response to the death of over two million Russian soldiers at war. As Clara Zetkin, a fierce opponent of imperialist war, declared in 1915, “The workers have nothing to gain from this war, but they stand to lose everything that is dear to them.”

Alongside demands to end the war, women strikers protested food shortages and poor living conditions. They understood that the economic conditions of working women are inseparable from the ruling class’s voracious drive to war. It is workers who die in rich men’s wars abroad and working women who shoulder the burdens of the economic war at home. It was the tens of thousands of Russian women striking that sparked the revolutionary foment which ultimately led to the overthrow of the tsar, proving that only an independent people’s movement can defeat an oppressive state and lead the way to a new society.

Today, working class and oppressed women in the United States can draw inspiration from socialist, anti-imperialist women around the world and across more than a century of struggle. As socialist women living in the center of imperialist aggression, we have a special responsibility to speak out against the death and destruction unleashed in our names, to show the connections between the U.S. war drive and the dire social problems that go unaddressed in our communities and to fight alongside working women of the world for an end to capitalist exploitation, patriarchal violence and endless imperialist wars.

Cleveland tenants demand fair treatment, compensation after displacement by burst water pipe - Liberation News 02/28/2023

For the past two months, residents at the Winton Manor Apartments in Cleveland have been displaced from their homes after a water pipe burst on the night of Dec. 23, 2022, flooding several apartments in the building.

Water ran for 14 hours before the valve was shut off. Both management in the building and property management executives failed to communicate effectively or respond quickly to the crisis.

The burst pipe came after over a year of negligence by the property management company, Evergreen Real Estate, which took over the building in May 2021. The irreparable damages caused by Evergreen’s management has compelled the residents to form a tenants council and struggle for compensation and fair housing.

Both the explosion and subsequent fire at a metal factory in Oakwood Village and the railway disaster in East Palestine are tragic examples proving once again that as long as the capitalist class is allowed to put profit above safety, the results will be deadly.

The Party for Socialism and Liberation calls on Cleveland residents to stand in solidarity with the displaced residents of Winton Manor and their tenants council, and materially assist them in their struggle.

Their struggle is the product of the systemic crises in our city - negligent landlords, government institutions which fail to serve the people, and the dictatorship of profits. These crises impact the vast majority in Cleveland, and must be confronted with deeper organization amongst poor and working people.

✨Join us at Mac's Backs-Books On Coventry on Friday, February 10th at 7:30 PM for a panel discussion on the launch of the latest issue of Breaking the Chains, titled "The Woman Worker".

The expanded organizing efforts of women workers has the potential to bring class struggle front and center to the women's movement in ways that have been repressed over the last several decades. What do these developments mean for women workers in the struggle for socialist liberation? How do we utilize our history, a vast history of women's leadership and initiative in the labor movement, to inform our work in the current context?

In the spirit of honoring women workers in the labor movement, we are incredibly excited to hear from workers of SBWorkersUnited

See you there!

Every New Year's Eve, activists gather outside the Cuyahoga County (In)Justice Center for a noise demonstration to show solidarity with those incarcerated inside and remind them that they are not forgotten.

At least 16 people have died inside the County Jail since 2018. Rather than direct resources towards reducing the jail population through bail reform and expanding diversion centers, the County has allocated $54 million in ARPA funding to a special jail and courthouse fund. Despite growing public opposition, plans to use these funds to build a new jail have continued behind closed doors.

While residents of Cuyahoga County are suffering from the effects of an ongoing pandemic, housing crisis, and inflation, County officials want to use relief funds for mass incarceration. We say no!
