A special story about the Cleveland Municipal Court is hitting the air tonight, and it’s one you won’t want to miss.

Leon Bibb recently visited the Court as we received a remarkable piece of history that helped shape the nation’s municipal courts.

And at the center of that history? An inspiring woman who broke boundaries, opened doors and was never afraid to be the one creating a pathway for others to follow.

Her story is one of perseverance, purpose and a willingness to go where others had not gone before.

It’s a piece of history worth knowing, and a story that just might inspire you.

Today, we recognize the Americans who signed the U.S. Constitution in 1787, creating the foundation for our nation’s system of laws and government.

More than two centuries later, the principles established in that document continue to guide the work we do every day at Cleveland Municipal Court. Our commitment is always to ensure the people we serve have access to a fair, impartial and just judicial system.

Today is also Citizenship Day, a time to recognize the rights and responsibilities that come with being a U.S. citizen, whether by birth or naturalization.

Two important reminders of the principles that help shape our community and our country.

Judge Jazmin Torres-Lugo is the first elected Hispanic woman to serve as a judge in Northeast Ohio.

After moving to Cleveland from her native Puerto Rico in 1990, Judge Torres-Lugo learned English, passed the Ohio Bar and built a career dedicated to serving her community. In 2003, she was appointed to the Cleveland Municipal Court. Fourteen years later, she returned to the bench after being elected by the community.

Her journey reflects a lesson her father shared with her growing up: “The most valued gem you can own is education. No one can steal that from you.”

Today, Judge Torres-Lugo continues to serve on the Cleveland Municipal Court, where she believes the court can provide opportunities and make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who come before it.

We recognize Judge Torres-Lugo for her historic place in Northeast Ohio and her commitment to the people she serves.

The Cleveland Municipal Court joins our community and our nation in honoring the victims, remembering the courage of those who responded, and recognizing the lasting impact of that day.

Congratulations to Chief Magistrate Lynn McLaughlin-Murray on receiving the Franklin A. Polk Public Servant Merit Award

For nearly four decades, Chief Magistrate Murray has said yes to opportunities, tackled tough problems and found ways to make her community better. From creating Cuyahoga County’s first Veterans Treatment Court to leading the magistrates at Cleveland Municipal Court, her career is a testament to what thoughtful, dedicated public service can accomplish.

And while the award recognizes her many professional accomplishments, we also celebrate the person behind them: a mentor, problem-solver and devoted public servant. Add in an impressive love of Excel spreadsheets, and you have a one-of-a-kind recipe for success.

We are proud to celebrate Chief Magistrate Murray, her decades of service and the lasting impact she continues to make.

Congratulations, Chief Magistrate Murray!
