💛 **What happens after a su***de loss matters.**

At our September Lunch & Learn, the **Pikes Peak Rising Business Collective**, part of the **Su***de Prevention Collaborative of El Paso County**, learned about **postvention** and the vital work of the **LOSS Team of El Paso County**.

We were honored to hear from local author and lived-experience speaker **Deanna Brown Mitchell**, who shared her story and insights on grief, connection, and healing.

A big thank-you to **ChangeLine** for hosting us and helping make space for this important conversation.

**Prevention is about connection. So is postvention. And it starts with us.** 💛

The adults who work with youth play an important role in prevention.

Teachers, coaches, mentors, counselors, youth workers, and other caring adults may be in a position to notice when something has changed for a young person.

SPP provides Su***de prevention training for staff in schools and youth-serving organizations to help teams recognize warning signs, respond appropriately, and connect youth with support.

You don’t have to have all the answers. You just need the knowledge and confidence to know what to do next. Let’s equip the adults who support youth every day.

Domestic violence and su***de prevention are not separate issues. They're connected.

Colorado data tells us why this conversation matters.

📊 38.9% of Colorado su***de deaths with known circumstances from 2016–2020 had an intimate partner problem documented.

📊 In Colorado's 2022 Domestic Violence Fatality Review, 70% of perpetrators who died died by su***de.

📊 Colorado recorded 72 domestic-violence-related deaths in 2024.

📊 75% of Colorado's 2024 domestic violence fatalities involved fi****ms.

These numbers represent people, families, relationships, trauma and loss.

They also point toward an opportunity:

We can intervene earlier.

We can ask about safety.
We can ask about su***de.
We can strengthen connection.
We can help people access support.
We can reduce access to lethal means during times of crisis.

Because prevention works best when we work together.

💙 **When lived experience opens the door to conversation, powerful things happen.**

Cass had the incredible opportunity to share a breakout session alongside her son, **Kareem**, at the **Teller County Su***de Prevention Awareness Symposium**—screening his documentary, *Pedicures Are for Boys*, followed by an honest community conversation about **masculinity, mental health, vulnerability, and stigma.**

What made this moment especially meaningful was getting to experience it side-by-side as mother and son—and watching Kareem use his voice and his story to challenge the idea that vulnerability makes us weak.

Because boys deserve permission to talk.
Men deserve permission to feel.
And all of us deserve spaces where we can show up as our whole selves. 💙

A special shoutout to the **Teller County Mental Health Alliance** for creating space for these important conversations and bringing our community together around su***de prevention and mental health.

And we are incredibly grateful for our partners at **Youth Documentary Academy**, whose work empowers young people to tell their own stories, spark dialogue, and help us see the world—and each other—a little differently.
