At 84, Robert “Bob” Plant is heading back to Kona.

It all started in 1989, when Plant volunteered at the IRONMAN World Championship and left inspired to race it himself. One year later, he returned as an athlete and finished fifth in his age group.

More than four decades later, he’s still racing.

Plant has earned seven age-group podium finishes at the IRONMAN World Championship, 20 USA Triathlon National Championship titles and a place in the USA Triathlon Hall of Fame. He also still holds the Kona 75-79 age-group record, set in 13:06:03.

Now, Plant returns to Kona as the oldest male athlete in the field.

When he’s not swimming, biking or running? He’s still working full-time as a dentist.

Some stories begin in Kona. Bob Plant’s is still being written there.
