19-year-old shooting survivor helps honor EMS personnel who saved his life 05/19/2026

We are so happy Layton Waugh, trauma survivor, was able to join us for The Ohio EMS Conference presented by OhioHealth yesterday. Layton survived an aortic injury from a gun shot would. His family, emergency responders and healthcare team members joined us for the recognition.

19-year-old shooting survivor helps honor EMS personnel who saved his life A 19-year-old who had a slim chance of survival after he was shot in the chest in December spoke at the Ohio EMS Conference on Monday.

On May12 Firefighter/Paramedic T. Merdeath was recognized at the annual "Stroke Survivor & Caregiver" dinner hosted by OhioHealth & Riverside Hospital. His immediate actions during patient care resulted in a stoke patient having a positive outcome, leading to a full recovery.

Firefighter/Paramedic John Perry Moore, 56
Columbus Division of Fire. Columbus, Ohio
Firefighter/Paramedic Moore was assigned as a paramedic instructor. He worked 24-hour shifts and was based at the department's training complex. When firefighters noticed that his vehicle had not moved, they entered his quarters to investigate and found that Firefighter/Paramedic Moore had died. His death was caused by a heart attack.
