"I will strive to remain technically and tactically proficient"- These words are not just words as part of a creed but rather words that every NCO and aspiring NCO learn and live in their pursuit of upholding and enforcing the standards of the Army profession.

Last month prior to Holiday Block Leave the Quarterly Soldier, NCO, and Drill Sergeant board was conducted in which participants are asked questions that relate to a series of Army topics such as Land Navigation, First Aid, Counseling, Leadership, and many more. Participants compete against peers to be recognized as the Drill Sergeant, NCO, or Soldier of the Quarter.

This quarter yielded strong, close, and highly competitive competition among the participants and resulted in the following winner:

Drill Sergeant: DS Slaughter; E Co/1-81 AR BN
NCO: SSG Pettit; E Co/1-81 AR BN
Soldier: SPC Bremer; HHC 194th AR BDE

The M24 Chaffee light tank entered production in April 1944, with manufacture carried out by both Cadillac and Massey-Harris; by the time production ended in August 1945, a total of 4,731 units had been built. It first saw combat service late in 1944, arriving in Europe just in time to take part in the final months of World War II. Compared with its predecessor light tanks (like the M5 Stuart), the Chaffee featured a substantially more powerful 75 mm M6 gun, torsion-bar suspension, wider tracks, a lower silhouette, and improved mobility — enhancements that made it much more effective in reconnaissance and infantry-support roles.

Tank Tuesday
"A Blast from the Past"

The M60 Series Main Battle Tank entered production in 1959 and would undergo a series of upgrades and variants until it was retired from service in 1997. This machine served many countries and to date is still in service in Egypt, Turkey, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Thailand and Bahrain. The original M60 MBT was outfitted with a 105mm rifled bore cannon and six-inch-thick homogenous steel hull. Employing a 7.62mm coaxial machinegun for shorter ranger enemy troops in the open engagements. This Goliath was powered by a powerful diesel engine that generated 750 horsepower and could reach a range of 300 miles at 30 miles per hour. The M60A3 would be the 4th edition of the tank and would gain global notoriety with computer ballistics, thermal optics, air filtration and laser range finding capabilities. This version of the tank would be battle tested as it saw combat during the first Gulf War as the M1 Abrams was being introduced as the new Main Battle Tank

**EDIT: please keep in mind this a new crew composed of young trainee privates with the exception of the rank commander, assigned to 1-81 AR in 19K OSUT. This is the phase of training where they are exposed to the craft and the techniques used to become proficient.**

Meet the Abrams Crew: Part 2 - Loader

“The loader has the following duties:

-Stow and care for ammunition.
-Load the main gun and the coaxial machine gun ready box.
-Aim and fire the loader's machine gun.
-Search for targets, maintain rear security, and act as air guard against enemy air attack and UASs, and as the antitank (AT) guided missile guard.
-Assist the tank commander as needed by providing directions to the driver, so the tank avoids obstacles, maintains its position in formation, and maneuvers effectively.
-Dismount the tank to provide local security or check dead space beyond intervisibility lines and visual obstructions.
-Dismount the tank to ground guide or check dead space around the tank.
-Be responsible for the turret maintenance of the tank.
-Inspect communication equipment and ensure it operates properly to include communications security.
-Assist other crewmembers, as necessary.

Because the loader is ideally positioned to observe around the tank and to monitor the tank's digital displays, platoon leaders and tank commanders should consider assigning an experienced crewman as the loader.”
