Prison doesn’t just end when the sentence does, it lingers in ways people on the outside rarely see. Inside, you learn to stay guarded, to read every situation carefully, and to suppress parts of yourself just to get through the day. But when you come home, those same survival habits don’t always fit. Trust feels risky, relationships can feel distant, and even simple things like making decisions or being in crowded spaces can feel overwhelming. There’s also the weight of judgment, jobs, housing, and opportunities don’t come easy, and it can feel like you’re constantly trying to prove you’ve changed. Mentally, it can stick with you too. The structure, the isolation, the constant alertness, it doesn’t just switch off. So even after release, you’re not just starting over… you’re trying to rebuild while carrying something that never fully leaves.
